The braking system is the most vital safety feature in your vehicle, making it the most important area to ensure is in good working order at all times. Here are a few telltale signs it may be time to replace the brakes!
- Most brake pads have a small metal tab that will contact the rotor when the pad is below the recommended thickness creating a squeak or screech. A similar noise may also be heard due to excessive brake dust or overheating.
- A grinding noise while braking indicates the brake pad is so thin the steel backing plate has dug into the rotor making new rotor and pad replacement a necessity.
- The brake pedal is soft or sinking to the floor.
- The steering wheel shakes when braking at higher speeds.
- The car pulls to one side while applying the brake pedal.
- The brake pedal vibrates when the brakes are engaged.
- Increase in stopping distance.
- The brake pedal has no assist or hard to press down when the vehicle is running.
- Most all vehicles have a sensor that will illuminate a dashboard light indicating a pressure imbalance in your brakes hydraulic system.
- Wet spots near the wheel can be a sign of a leaking brake hose or connection to the caliper.
- The outside face of a rotor should look and feel smooth. If the rotor looks to be grooved, uneven or has metal shavings it will most likely need to be replaced.
